There are a lot of weight loss methods being offered today not only in fitness centers but in medical clinics as well. One of the most recent methods being introduced is weight loss through infusion therapy. These types of infusion provide the type of nutrients one needs at the same time reducing the appetite.
It is important to note that one of the most dangerous routes of administration of weight loss products is through IV infusions. This is primarily because it is absorbed directly through your blood, bypassing the digestive system. Aside from that, it can cause fatal complications of the heart and other major organs in the body; which is why it is very important that you should be well aware of the protocols and the troubleshooting of these lines to ensure that it is administered to you correctly.
Protocols on IV Flushing
- The use of normal saline in flushing peripheral IV line.
- Peripheral IV lines should be flushed using a 0.9% NaCl or saline solution when administering two types of weight loss infusions; after drawing blood from the infusion set; when there is blood within the set; and per manufacturer’s recommendation. The minimum amount of the flushing volume should be equal to or at least twice the volume of the IV line catheter, plus the volume of the additional devices that are being used.
- The amount of normal saline solution used for flushing and its frequency.
- Any peripheral IV line should be flushed with at least a minimum of 2 mL normal saline solution after each use of the IV line or at least once every 12 hours.
- Troubleshooting a peripheral IV line that has air bubbles in it.
- Flush the peripheral IV line with the use of a normal saline solution before connecting the line to the catheter.
- Secure the roller clamp in order to prevent the air from advancing to the venipuncture site.
- Tap the lower portion of the tubing where there are air bubbles to enable the bubbles to move upward towards the drip chamber of the IV line.
- You may also wrap the IV tubing around the pen, just below the location of the air bubble; this will move the air farther up.
- You may also insert the syringe to the access point, open the roller clamp, and remove the air out into the syringe. This is only applicable if the air bubble is above the access point. As soon as you have removed the air out, adjust the flow rate of the solution.
